Work Standards in Hospital Intensive Care Units

Work Standards in Hospital Intensive Care Units

I have a new project with Dr Paulo Borem, senior director at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.   Dr Borem has been leading a number of large-scale improvement projects in Brazil.   Paulo’s current project will help 200 public hospital intensive care units adopt and maintain infection prevention procedures that aim to cut infection rates in half.   We believe that a quality control system is required by the ICUs to reliably use the infection procedures and achieve the goal.   We also believe that clear work standards are the foundation of quality control.  How should we proceed to build this belief into the ICU project?

In the past year, Lean Frontiers has presented multiple webinars and educational offerings to disseminate Isao Kato’s five Step Ups model of standardized work.  Many of these events have been facilitated by Oscar Roche.

Oscar’s presentation of Mr Kato’s perspective has clarified and organized many ideas and concepts.   I’ve written four posts in the past seven months as I have worked to understand Mr Kato’s perspective as presented by Oscar (Work Standard and Standard WorkStandardization or Improvement:  Where to start?Job Instruction Breakdowns and Work StandardsLearning How to Improve:  Start with Work Standards).

With Paulo’s help, I will give a short webinar on March 30 hosted by Oscar; registration link is given below.   We will describe how the Kato Step Up model has shaped the ICU project planning.  Our presentation will focus on work standards, Step Up 1.  The pdf of our presentation is available here.
